LinuxPlanet - Tutorials - Linux Networking: Exploring Samba - The Samba Essentials Server Message Block (SMB), also known as Common Internet File System (CIFS), is one of the most common protocols for sharing files on a network. It is used with Microsoft Windows and, through Samba, a variety of other operating systems include Linux. Samba provides a way to share the contents of Linux directories with other computers and to access shared directories on a remote computer. The type of remote computer does not matter. It could be a computer running Sun Solaris or Windows NT.

Oregon Live: The Edge -- The Pantless Menace -- May 18, 1999 contains mention of a New Yorker story (New Yorker magazine currently does not make its back issues available on the Internet) about an attempt by MTV to create hip new slang. There was no later coverage as to how the effort failed, which it did.

Hoorah, I think. On a project now, in San Francisco again. Doing the Monday-to-Friday thing so far, and hoping to pull it back to Mon-Thurs in a few weeks. Billable at last, billable at last; thank God almighty, I'm billable at last.
The project is Disaster Recovery Planning. Fascinating stuff, and ample opportunity for me to either shine or hang myself. Certainly it's important for the client, so I'll be providing value (an important thing for me, as I would hate to perform work where I didn't see the value in it, or was worried that it won't be worth what they're paying me).

Been a while since I posted anything. Developments:
1. bought a house
2. working on the home Oracle lab
2a. got Oracle8i (8.1.7) and 9i (9.0.1) up
2b. upgraded to 1 GB of memory on the DB server machine
2c. got a bunch of Quest tools on trial -- need to use in next white paper
2d. discovered important differences between ANALYZE TABLE and DBMS_STATS approach.
Still no projects for me. Grumpy.

Ground Zero and the Saudi connection is another example of brilliant British journalism, this time on the roots of bin Laden's religous extremism.
